National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC): 7 Things to Know Before You Enroll in 2027

Updated November 2026

TL;DR

The National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) runs short, paid career-exploration programs on 11 college campuses for students in grades 6 to 12. For summer 2027, most high school sessions last about nine days and cost $4,395 to $4,895 residential or $3,745 to $4,145 commuter, with Oxford sessions at $6,695 to $6,895. Enrollment is open and rolling, so a nomination letter isn't a selective award, and you can enroll without one.

Getting an NSLC nomination letter in the mail can feel like you've been hand-picked. What it really offers is a well-run, hands-on introduction to a field like medicine, law, engineering or business, with a taste of dorm life, for a substantial fee. This guide covers what NSLC includes, what it costs in 2027, the refund rules to read before you pay and how admissions officers are likely to see it.

What is the National Student Leadership Conference, and what does it cost in 2027?

The National Student Leadership Conference is an independent summer program provider, not part of any university, that has run career-focused programs since 1989. It began with a single law program and now lists 30 programs on 11 campuses, with students from 110+ countries, according to its About page. High schoolers choose from 26 fields, from medicine and law to forensic science, aerospace and film, while middle schoolers get four middle school programs.

Who can attend NSLC, and what is the NSLC acceptance rate?

High school programs take students aged 14 to 18 who have completed at least one year of high school, and you can attend the summer after you graduate. Middle school programs, per NSLC's summer program FAQs, take students who are at least 11 and currently in 6th, 7th or 8th grade, so current 8th graders belong on the middle school track. There's no GPA or test-score minimum for enrollment, and you don't need a nomination; NSLC's educator nomination criteria only ask teachers to look for a "B" average and leadership potential.

NSLC doesn't publish an acceptance rate or cohort size, and it accepts applications "if space is available in a program or on a program's waitlist." In practice, that means NSLC fills seats rather than picking a small cohort.

How long are NSLC programs, and what will you do each day?

Most NSLC high school sessions run about nine days, Oxford sessions run 12 days, and the Leadership & Service program and the middle school programs run six days. All of them happen in person over the summer, between June 13 and August 7, 2027, for high school sessions, so they don't clash with school. A typical program mixes:

  • Field-specific activities: in Engineering, for example, teams build drones, underwater robots and wind turbines on the program page's list of projects.

  • Guest speakers and site visits: past Engineering speakers came from SpaceX and NASA Goddard, and visits have included NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab and the Tesla factory.

  • Leadership sessions: workshops on personality styles, communication and listening, resilience and empathy.

  • Supervised campus life: an 11:1 student-to-staff ratio, with Team Advisors who double as Resident Advisors on your dorm floor.

If you'd rather spend those weeks building real work experience, Ladder Internships offers remote, eight-week start-up internships at 5 to 10 hours a week, so you can do one during the school year too.

7 things to know before you enroll in the National Student Leadership Conference

1. An NSLC nomination letter isn't a selective award

An NSLC nomination is a recruiting channel, not an academic honor. NSLC says teachers, counselors and alumni nominate students each year, and students "may also be invited based on individual results of standardized testing or selected from one of several national talent identification surveys." Treat the letter as an invitation to consider the program, and judge it like any other paid summer option.

2. NSLC enrollment is a short online form plus a deposit

You enroll through NSLC's online enrollment application and pay a deposit by credit or debit card. NSLC's FAQ describes enrollment as just that; essays, a transcript and a recommendation only come in if you apply for a scholarship.

3. The host university doesn't run NSLC

NSLC rents campus facilities, so the university's name tells you where you'll sleep, not who designed the program. NSLC's own disclaimers say it is not affiliated with Duke or Columbia, is not sponsored by UCLA or Rice, and is not part of or endorsed by the University of Oxford, where it rents facilities and college rooms.

4. The National Student Leadership Conference costs $2,820 to $6,895 in 2027

Most high school sessions cost $4,395 to $4,895 residential or $3,745 to $4,145 commuter, per NSLC's 2027 dates and locations page. The 12-day Oxford sessions are the priciest at $6,695 to $6,895, while the six-day Leadership & Service program at Georgetown costs $3,295 residential or $2,895 commuter. Middle school programs such as Medicine & Health Care run from $2,820 commuter to $3,395 residential.

5. NSLC tuition covers housing, meals and activities, but not travel

Residential tuition includes supervised campus housing and an on-campus dining plan, plus course materials, trips, tours, activities and transportation to off-campus events. You'll still pay for travel to and from campus, which adds up for Oxford or a cross-country flight, along with laundry, off-campus meals and spending money. Commuters also cover their own parking and daily travel.

6. NSLC's cancellation fees climb sharply in spring 2027

Read the refund rules before you pay, because the cost of changing your mind rises fast. For summer 2027:

  • Grace period: enroll before April 1, 2027, and you have 30 days to cancel for a full refund; enroll later and you have 48 hours.

  • After the grace period: canceling by April 1 costs a $500 non-refundable fee, and canceling April 2 to May 1 costs $1,500.

  • From May 2, 2027: you forfeit 100% of tuition paid.

7. NSLC college credit is optional and costs extra

Every high school program offers an optional one-credit online course through American University, for a separate fee ($1,044 in summer 2026). NSLC's college credit page says the coursework runs on AU's Canvas platform in July and August, after your program, and that each college decides whether to accept the credit. AU mails an official transcript once grades post. Skip it unless you have a clear use for one transferable credit.

Is the National Student Leadership Conference legit, and is it prestigious?

Yes, NSLC is a legitimate, long-running program with real supervision, but it isn't a prestigious or selective credential. It has run programs since 1989, publishes its dates, fees and refund rules, and lists 24/7 overnight supervision and background-checked staff. But there's no published acceptance rate, anyone who meets the age and grade rules can enroll, and the famous campuses don't run or endorse the programs.

Think of NSLC as a paid career-exploration experience, not an honor to list for its name.

Is NSLC worth it for your college applications?

NSLC is worth it if you want a structured, low-pressure look at a career before choosing a major, and your family can afford the cost; it won't impress admissions officers on its own. Colleges know NSLC is a paid, open-enrollment program, so what counts is what you did with it. It suits a 9th or 10th grader who wants to find out quickly whether medicine or law really interests them, and who would enjoy a first taste of dorm life.

Ladder Internships places high school students in remote, eight-week start-up internships, where they work on a real project with a company coach. If you already know your field and want a project you can show colleges, an internship like this builds more than a short program can.

How do you apply to NSLC, and when are the 2027 deadlines?

Enroll online, choose your program and session, and pay the deposit; seats are first-come, so enroll early for popular campuses. If you need help with the cost, apply for an NSLC scholarship after you enroll. Most awards are $500 to $1,000, and you must show financial need. The scholarship application asks for:

  • Your NSLC ID, issued after you submit the enrollment application.

  • A recent transcript (unofficial or scanned is fine).

  • One educator recommendation from a teacher or counselor (not needed for Day Program applicants).

  • Household income and your fundraising goal.

  • Two short essays (under 500 words each): why you deserve a scholarship and your financial situation.

Common questions about the National Student Leadership Conference

What does a day at NSLC look like?

Days mix hands-on activities in your field with leadership workshops, guest speakers and site visits. An Engineering student might flight-test a team drone one day and tour a NASA center the next, alongside a small group led by a Team Advisor.

Does NSLC offer scholarships?

Yes, NSLC awards more than $500,000 a year, mostly in amounts of $500 to $1,000. You must enroll and pay a deposit first, show financial need and apply by April 1, 2027.

Can 8th graders attend NSLC's high school programs?

No. High school programs require that you've completed at least one year of high school. Current 6th, 7th and 8th graders can attend the six-day middle school programs instead.

What if you want hands-on work experience instead of a short program?

An internship lets you spend weeks on one real project instead of sampling a field. Ladder Internships places high school students in remote, eight-week start-up internships with a company coach, at 5 to 10 hours a week, with full financial aid available. The next deadline is November 15, 2026, for the Winter I cohort starting December 7, 2026.
