Lumiere Education offers its flagship research program at no cost for gifted low-income students through the Lumiere Research Inclusion Foundation. The Foundation enables students around the world whose families earn less than $50,000 a year to complete a mentored research paper.  

How are Lumiere’s programs structured?

Lumiere provides four programs catering to different academic goals and levels of commitment:

1. Individual Research Program

This is Lumiere’s core offering: a 12-week guided research experience where students work one-on-one with a Ph.D. mentor. Throughout 9 mentor sessions, you will select a research question, conduct a literature review, develop your methodology, and write a research paper. In addition, you’ll attend two writing sessions to build your academic writing skills.

2. Premium Research Program

The Premium Research Program builds upon the Individual track by providing support for submitting your research paper to academic journals. You’ll receive 15 mentoring sessions, 4 writing support sessions, and 4 meetings with a publication advisor. The program spans 3–4 months, with an optional 1–4 additional months dedicated to preparing your paper for submission to a journal.

3. Professor Premium Publication Program

This program takes the concept of publication support a step further by pairing you with faculty members from Top-20 U.S. universities. You’ll have 10 mentor sessions with a professor and an additional 4 sessions each with writing and publication specialists, giving your project the highest chance of meeting academic publishing standards.

4. Lumiere Research Fellowship

The most rigorous of Lumiere’s programs, the Research Fellowship is for students who aim to participate in elite academic competitions or publish their work in highly selective journals. It includes 30 mentorship sessions, 6–8 writing coaching sessions, and 4 meetings with a publication expert. The program lasts 6 to 12 months, enabling sustained engagement with your research topic.

Students who complete research through Lumiere are eligible to receive college credit from the University of California, San Diego’s Extended Studies school. Earning college credit while in high school can help you get a head start on your undergraduate education. 

Lumiere’s programs are conducted online, making them accessible to students globally. Expect to dedicate several hours each week to meetings, reading, writing, and revising your research paper.

Who is eligible for Lumiere’s programs?

How does the application process work?

Lumiere runs programs in the fall, winter, spring, and summer. Here are the dates and deadlines for the summer program: 

• Summer Cohort I

• Priority Admission - March 9

• Regular Admission I - April 13

• Start date - June 2

The application process consists of four stages:

1. Stage 1 – You will have to submit your online application before the cohort deadline.

2. Stage 2 – If shortlisted, you will be interviewed by a member of Lumiere’s team.

3. Stage 3 – If you clear the interview, the next stage is mentor matching. This is a longer process that takes into account your interests, the current projects mentors are working on, and their capacity. You will be informed of the final decision at this stage.

4. Stage 4 – If the mentor matching is successful, you can start your research!

2. There is a significant time commitment: Weekly meetings, readings, and independent writing can be demanding. Students juggling numerous other responsibilities may struggle to balance them.
