How Long Should a Recommendation Letter Be? A 2027 Guide for High School Students

Updated November 2026

TL;DR

A recommendation letter should usually be one page, about 300 to 500 words, unless the application says otherwise. Internship and job letters fit comfortably on one page; nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships often expect one to two single-spaced pages; and online portals set their own word or character limits, which always win. Before you ask, check the application's format and give your recommender two or three specific examples of your work.

Length matters less than what fills it. What sets a strong recommendation apart is evidence: how the writer knows you, two or three relevant strengths and a specific example behind each one. This guide covers the right length for four common application types and how you can help your recommender write a stronger letter.

Why does recommendation letter length matter?

A letter that's too short can suggest your recommender doesn't know your work well, while a long letter of general praise is just as unconvincing. The right length gives your recommender room to explain the relationship, name your strengths and back each one up.

"Hardworking, punctual and enthusiastic" says little; a description of how you ran a research assignment, solved a technical problem or used feedback says a lot. That matters most when you have little formal work experience, so the aim is to make every paragraph count.

How long should a recommendation letter be for an internship?

One page is the practical target. The University of Chicago's Career Advancement office says "1 page is a good target length for most letters of recommendation unless otherwise specified by the employer." For a first internship, the letter should show you can contribute even without a job history.

Choose someone who has seen you use the skills the internship needs. For a research internship, a teacher who supervised your project can describe how you formed a question, analyzed information, handled setbacks and presented your findings.

How long should a recommendation letter be for a job?

One page is enough for part-time and entry-level jobs, focused on how you meet workplace expectations. A former supervisor might describe how you handled responsibilities, met deadlines, worked with others or took feedback.

You don't need past employment to get a useful reference. The UC Davis Career Center lists supervisors, faculty mentors, advisers and coaches as potential references, so a volunteer coordinator who watched you run an event can speak to your work ethic.

How long should a recommendation letter be for a scholarship or competitive program?

For nationally competitive awards, one to two single-spaced pages is common. West Texas A&M's scholarship guidance advises recommenders to "aim for a letter that is 1-2 pages single-spaced," because these letters often address several criteria, such as academic ability, research potential and leadership. Check your specific program before assuming a longer letter is right.

Help your recommender link your work to the selection criteria. For a research program, share a project where you worked independently or overcame a technical problem; for a leadership scholarship, share an initiative you led and what it achieved.

How long should a recommendation be on an online portal?

When a portal sets a word or character limit, that limit is the length, even if it's shorter than a page. Penn's Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships tells referees to follow each program's word or character limits, since some fellowships reject letters that don't comply.

Check the format before you ask: is it an uploaded letter or separate answer boxes? If the form asks about leadership and teamwork separately, remind your recommender of one example for each.

How do you help your recommender write a strong letter?

Give your recommender everything they need in one short message.

  • A summary of your work together: your responsibilities, contributions and results.

  • The deadline and submission instructions, including any word or character limits.

  • What the opportunity values, with two or three examples that match it.

  • Enough notice: three to four weeks is generally enough, and earlier is better.

Keep a running record of your contributions while you work, so you have examples ready. Ladder Internships accepts high school students in grades 9 to 12 worldwide for remote start-up internships, where a supervisor sees your work firsthand and can later speak to it.

Common questions about recommendation letter length

Is two pages too long for a recommendation letter?

Not for competitive scholarships or fellowships, which often expect one to two pages. For most internships and entry-level jobs, one page is enough unless the application says otherwise.

Is three weeks enough notice to ask for a recommendation letter?

Yes. Three to four weeks is generally enough, though asking earlier is better. Send the deadline, requirements and examples of your work with your request.

What if a recommendation letter is only half a page?

It can still work if it gives specific examples of your work. If it's only general praise, offer your recommender more examples before they submit.

How can you get a stronger recommendation letter?

Do real work for someone who can describe it. Ladder Internships runs remote, eight-week start-up internships for high school students worldwide, at 5 to 10 hours a week, with a company coach and full financial aid available. The next deadline is November 15, 2026, for the Winter I cohort starting December 7, 2026.
